Animal Defenders International (ADI), the leading animal welfare organization that works globally for the protection of animals, speaks out following a recent incident in the Ukraine in which an animal trainer was attacked and badly mauled. ADI believes such attacks continue to demonstrate the dangers of using wild animals in circuses for entertainment and is working towards a worldwide ban on the use of animals in circuses for entertainment.
The incident captured on video by a terrified onlooker shows lions mauling and seriously injuring a circus trainer during a display. At one point, one of the lions almost leaps out of the net surrounding the ring and into the crowd.
Lions attacked a trainer (video below) named Oleksie Pinko during a Ukraine Circus performance this week. The Ukraine Lion attack video comes just one month after the Las Vegas MGM Grand lion attack and less than a year after Shamu whale Tilikum killed trainer Dawn Brancheau.
While the MGM Grand was quick to defend the actions of its trainers during a September 2010 attack, Ukraine circus reps have yet to comment on a video that was posted to the net and picked up by British news today.
The Ukraine video shows Oleksie Pinko and his partner trainer during a Circus performance in the city of Lviv. U.S. attendees tell British news that children spectators were seated only ten feet from the drama. Families were separated from the lions by only a mesh fence. Without much explanation, one of the lions fumes as Oleksie Pinko who has been garnishing a stick.
CIRCUS Oz members will be turning cartwheels of joy today as they learn that their search for a new home is over at last. The state government is expected to announce that it will give the troupe $10 million to begin refurbishing the site of the former TAFE college on Johnston Street, Collingwood, that will from 2012 be its home.
The money will be used to create rehearsal spaces, teaching rooms and workshops that will allow the company to undertake both commercial fund-raising activities and the development and rehearsal of new work simultaneously.
Circus Oz already runs kids’ circus skills classes and corporate training programs in Port Melbourne, where it has been based since 1993, but the space is too small to allow for these activities and show rehearsals to happen at the same time.
It’s one of the biggest orders of the year: more than 200 loaves of bread — keeping the staff busy at Widoff’s Bakery in Worcester. But what may surprise you, is where all of this is going.
The boxes of bread from Widoff’s are headed to the DCU Center, a special request on behalf of nine elephants in town for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus.
And for more than a decade, Joseph Ducas and his team have worked round the clock to make it happen.

A well-recognized and traditional mime “costume” is that of a white face, with black coloring around the eyes, a red painted mouth, a striped shirt, and suspenders attached to their pants. Painting a mime face takes at least thirty minutes. It’s recommended that facial hair be shaved and long hair be pulled away from the face. Apply skin moisturizer (not greasy cold cream). Outline your face in a white base, then start at the nose and work your way out to the edges.
Tip: Adding markings over cake makeup is easier than over grease makeup. Otherwise, you’ll want to lightly add white face powder to help the other paint to adhere when you apply the black around your eyes and anywhere else you’ll need it.
For best results, add markings as follows:
1. Eyebrows and other markings
2. Outline eyes
3. Add mascara
4. Add lipstick
